Preincarnation Species: Human.
Preincarnation Appearance: Here!
Any differences: He has a lack of scars from past abuse. Otherwise, nope, no differences! He'll mostly dress like this, though, sans glasses.
Preincarnated History: Take it. Please just take it oh god i'm sorry

Reincarnated History: Shuuya grew up with only his mother, his father having left them at his birth. Determined to show that her ex-husband was wrong for leaving her, Ms. Nakano would spend years picking up various hobbies and jobs, all of which her son would imitate. After becoming a teacher, an artist, and many other occupations with varying successes, she finally settled for being a journalist for a paper in Locke City since it provided her and her son the most stable income.

He would spend his uneventful childhood growing up in Locke City, wanting little and dreaming heavily. As a cheerful and outgoing boy he rarely had trouble making friends, though he had a reputation for being flighty and childish. He was somewhat of a trouble child too, having a penchant for pranks and practical jokes that frequently got him into trouble when coupled with his blunt attitude. Without any siblings at home and his mother always out at work, Shuuya was a little lonely. Though this meant that he was able to take care of himself better than most kids his age, it almost meant that he had the streak for searching out the forbidden and dangerous to alleviate his boredom.

During his mother's artistic ventures he gained a passion for street art and photography. He hopes one day to work at the newspaper that she does. Until then, he attends high school like any other normal kid his age, his biggest hobby being the semi-popular MMORPG, And the Next Days (AND).

First Echo: Shuuya invites Tsubomi to a festival! In the middle of the hustle and bustle, he loses sight of her. Once they meet up again, he remembers a time when they went to a Japanese culture festival at a school whose name escapes him. How bizarre.

Preincarnation Personality: Rarely seen without a smile, Kano provides the comic relief for the Dan. Acting as the stereotypical jester, he relentlessly teases anyone and everyone, whether it's a timid quarter-medusa or a hapless hikiNEET. No one's safe from his jokes or pranks, and the fact that he's been frozen to the spot or kneed in the stomach for his behavior doesn't seem to deter him. It takes something as little as a cloth slapping someone in the face to send him into a fit of giggles and he's laughed himself to tears on more than one occasion. Simply put, Kido's nickname of "idiot" seems to fit him perfectly. After all, only a moron would do something like snap selfies while infiltrating a hostage situation, right?

Dig in a little deeper, though, and it becomes clear that Kano's cheerful nature is only part of a larger mask. Having grown up in an environment where he blamed himself for the ostracization his mother went through, Kano's learned how to disguise what he truly feels in an attempt to ease her burden. Lies became a tool for him to protect those close to him. As long as he acts fine and smiles, others will treat it like it's fine and stop their worrying. That's how his logic goes, and it's sprinkled throughout canon. On the way to the department store, Kano projects himself as cheerfully walking alongside his friends while he's actually scouting the area. Despite the tense situation in a terrorist attack, he kept his upbeat and casual attitude to help keep the Dan calm and focused on their goal. In reality, he's surprisingly perceptive to his surroundings and of others. It's fine if he comes off as stupid or clueless. So long as he manages to help his friends, he's willing to play the part of the fool, though he can shrug it off if the situation calls for it.

With this mindset, however, comes a darker side. Kano almost never notifies the Dan of what his plans are or what he may be thinking. After their trip to the amusement park, Kano leaves a text that told them he won't be coming home and disappears for two whole nights without so much as a call. He wanders off on his own without warning and gives vague answers whenever he's prodded to discuss something important. Misdirection and subtle manipulation are his forte. Kano isn't afraid to lie to his friends--in fact, he outright admits once that he had lied about not knowing about Momo's arrival and continues to joke on as if it's nothing. He wants to do the best for his friends. But he isn't afraid to lie and manipulate them if he feels that it's for their own good.

He's well-meaning and a kind boy at heart, despite these faults. His wish had been born out of the desire to protect his mother, despite the fact that she physically abused him. He genuinely enjoys the time spent with his friends and their mission to help those like them, viewing it all as good memories. And all his bullying, cruel and annoying as it can be sometimes, has at the very least good intentions behind it. He isn't above apologizing if he goes too far.

All of these traits are parts of him he recognizes, some more than others. But despite the reassurances given to him by the Tateyamas and despite his convictions that he's doing the Right Thing, Kano ultimately views himself as a "monster" ever since he gained his eyes. To him, his liar persona has consumed him, and the smiling, lying pierrot has seized control of his life. Even if he wished to stop lying, Kano feels that he's trapped in an eternal cycle of deception. After all, if they discovered what he'd been doing behind their backs and if they saw all parts of him, they'd consider him a dirty person, wouldn't they? The only tool he has are his lies, even as he hates himself for it and feels immense guilt. As much as he wishes for someone to see through him--to save him, in a sense--Kano's terrified of being discovered. In the end, he resigns himself to his lies, deciding that he can't be rescued.

That's not to say that all his smiles are fake. He genuinely thinks things like Mary trying to return a massager is hilarious, and he wants the Dan to do their best at helping other fellow "monsters" and to be the heroes that their adoptive sister taught them they were. That sort of thing was possible for them.

But not him.

Any differences:
Honesty
Shuuya, in this incarnation, is a far more honest boy compared to his original self. Having devoted himself to the dream of working at his mother's paper, he's less likely to lie and would rather be straightforward (maybe too much) towards those he knows. Added to the fact that his relationship with his mother is stable, he has little motivation to lie all in all.

Childishness
Kano had this to some extent. For Shuuya, however, who's rarely had to worry about anything aside from what dinner would be, he acts embarrassingly immature for his age. Where Kano knows how to keep a calm facade, Shuuya's quicker to let his true emotions shine through and to jump to a rash decision. He's not the best at waiting and would rather go upon impulse. This often leads to bad outcomes. He's also easily excitable by anything that appeals to his sense of wonder or "cool"--giant robots, etc. etc.

Self-Confidence
It goes without saying that Kano had almost none of this. Shuuya is proud of who he is and unafraid to look stupid if he's having fun. Everything's going right for him. There's no reason for him to doubt himself, right?

Abilities: Kano possesses the "Deceiving Eye" ability, which allows him to create illusions that affect what others see when they look at him. This only affects himself and anything immediately in contact with him. When his powers are active, his eyes glow red. Otherwise, he's a normal human boy, if you ignore the fact that he's possessed by a snake. This ability was almost in constant use 24/7--it's unlikely that there was a time when he's consciously let it down.

Roleplay Sample - Third Person:
The footsteps thundered past the tree he hid behind, their shouts of "There!" fading into the distance. Breathing out, Shuuya peeked out. The paint was still wet on their clothes--he could see the outlines of their footprints on the concrete, making him snicker. But they were out of the park for sure. He was safe.

"Geez, they're pretty clumsy," he muttered to himself, a cheeky grin on his face. Although his heart was beating fast in his chest a sense of excitement was twined in with it, making his toes curl. He shouldn't have done that. Come tomorrow, he'd probably regret it. But at this moment it made an ideal photo, locked securely away in the camera swaying from his neck. It'll be part of the present he gives her when he sees her again.

But there was one more thing he had to get to before he could call it a day. Today had to be special, because today they were going to get to the bottom of all this 'Echo' business buzzing about in their heads.

Shuuya's bike was buried beneath a pile of leaves. Yanking it up, he brushed the leaves off before straddling it. "Let's see, let's see... if it's as easy as going to a festival there's gotta be some other things that'll trigger it." He looked towards the streets, his grin broadening.

"Pfft. Can't be too bad. Ahh, I bet I'll be the first to remember it all before her, too!" With that cheerful declaration he pushed off, his bike's gears whirring as he rode into the busy city.
